Dr. Letha Y. Griffin, MD, PhD, has been inducted into the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Hall of Fame, one of the highest honors in the field. A trailblazer, Dr. Griffin has shattered glass ceilings throughout her career as a physician, educator and leader in orthopaedic sports medicine, paving the way for future generations of women in medicine.
Dr. Griffin made history in 1981 as the first female Active Member of AOSSM. Over her decades-long career, she has served as a team physician for Georgia State University and numerous collegiate and professional programs, helping to shape the modern landscape of athlete care. Her academic achievements, include multiple degrees from The Ohio State University and more than 60 scholarly publications, underscore her role as a thought leader in orthopedic care.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Griffin has held leadership roles with AOSSM, AAOS, NATA, and served on the Medical Organizing Committee for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
“We are incredibly proud of Dr. Griffin’s induction into the AOSSM Hall of Fame,” said Steve Karasick, Chief Executive Officer, Peachtree Orthopedics. “She is a pioneer whose influence can be seen in every corner of our specialty. Her work has opened doors for generations to follow.”
Dr. Griffin joins an elite group of medical professionals whose contributions have significantly advanced the orthopaedic field. Her induction is not only a celebration of her extraordinary legacy, but also a milestone in the continued progress toward equity and inclusion in sports medicine, especially meaningful in a specialty where this elite honor remains exceptionally rare for women.
