Morgan Medical Center now offers advanced cardiology services led by board-certified cardiologist Dr. John Layher and his team.
With nearly 30 years of cardiovascular expertise, Dr. Layher has practiced in Georgia’s Piedmont region since 1999. He is perhaps best known for co-establishing the Oconee Heart & Vascular Center in 2008, which was founded in partnership with St. Mary’s Health Care System.

Dr. Layher earned his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine, completed his residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and completed his cardiology fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine.
His approach to care emphasizes early detection, prevention, and individualized, patient-centered treatment plans. The new cardiology service line provides a range of specialized care, including:
Cardiology Services: Preventive cardiology and heart disease risk reduction, coronary artery disease evaluation and management, heart failure diagnosis and treatment, valvular heart disease evaluation, cardiac arrhythmia evaluation and management.
Advanced Cardiac Imaging: Echocardiography, cardiac CT (coronary CTA), cardiac MRI, nuclear cardiology, vascular ultrasound.
Device Therapy: Pacemaker implantation, implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implantation, cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices, in-office and remote pacemaker/ICD monitoring.

Morgan Medical Center is a 25-bed critical access hospital located in Madison, Georgia. The Medical Center provides a fully-staffed 24-hour emergency room, comprehensive outpatient and inpatient services, acute care, and swing bed programs. Originally opened in 1960, Morgan Medical Center was the first critical access hospital in the state of Georgia certified as a Level IV Trauma Center.
